Hugely influential painter Jackson Pollock was a prominent figure in the abstract expressionist movement, which became popular in the late 1940's and 1950's. While known for being mostly reclusive with a volatile personality, Pollock gained considerable notoriety and fame during his lifetime, and his works are still widely celebrated today, most notably his "drip" paintings he created at the height of his career. Since his death in 1956, several major art institutions have held large-scale retrospectives featuring his work.
