Mark Rothko was born in Russia, but was considered to be an American expressionist painter. He was influenced by surrealist artist, Paul Klee, in his early career, and Piet Mondrian during his developing years as an artist. Rothko established his own style over time from having a subject matter consisting of mythological subjects and representational themes, to becoming more of an abstract artist by working with shapes, colors and light. In his writings, Rothko noted that the abstract piece was similar to the work of a child and the importance of color was relevant in the human developmental process.
