Provenance
A gift from the artist to Mrs. Genevieve Runkel Nesbit, May 26, 1938. Thence by descent through the family to the present owner, Mrs. Kathy Doll (granddaughter of Genevieve Nesbit)
The offered lot is the preparatory sketch for Curry’s oil painting of the same subject, Progressive Party Rally, 1938, currently housed at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art in Madison, Wisconsin. Like the oil painting, the offered lot depicts the then governor of Wisconsin, Phil La Follette (American 1897-1965) addressing a crowd in the University Stock Pavilion on the University of Wisconsin’s campus at the first National Progressive Party rally which took place on April 28, 1938.
