About the Event
Patria Petrona, a multidisciplinary project under the artistic direction of actor/director Alfredo Arias, in collaboration with artist Juan Stoppani and fashion designer Pablo Ramírez, evokes, for the first time in decades, the image of culinary figure Doña Petrona C. de Gandulfo, an important personality in Argentinean popular culture.
Patria Petrona will present, at Proa’ s Contemporary Space, life size porcelain replicas of a selection of Petrona’ s most classic cakes, taken from her famous cookbook. Wedding cake, national cake, birthday cake, christening cake, tea cake and a theme cake of the neighbourhood of La Boca; all accompanied by mannequins with special designs by Pablo Ramírez, reinterpreting Doña Petrona’ s aesthetics. The bride, the scholar, the teacher, the godmother, the children and the family, all reproduced at life-sized scale and in a series of small dolls displayed at the Library.
Patria Petrona is, in words of Alfredo Arias, rather a “poetic displacement of the memory” than a “historical or sociological undertaking”, an area in which the childhood memory meets national history.
Audiovisual material, videos of her TV shows and editions of her emblematic cookbooks complete the first exhibition devoted to one of the most symbolic personalities of Argentinean popular culture.
Patria Petrona reconstructs the image of Argentinean women defined by theme magazines, television programs and special publications produced from the 40s until the 90s.
