About the Venue

Founded in 1928 by industrialist and philanthropist Dr. Armand Hammer, Hammer Galleries today specializes in Impressionist, Modern, and Post-War masters. Hammer Galleries quickly rose to prominence when, in the early 1930s, it exhibited the world-famous Russian Imperial Easter Eggs by celebrated court jeweler Karl Fabergé. After beginning with a primary focus on Russian icons, Imperial porcelains, and rare art objects, in the 1960s Hammer Galleries shifted its focus to 19th- and 20th-century European and American masters. In 1980, Hammer moved into a turn-of-the-century townhouse on 57th Street, its home for the next thirty years.
In 2010, Hammer Galleries moved to new premises at 475 Park Avenue. Hammer's change in location was accompanied by an expansion of its focus. Hammer continues to concentrate on Impressionist and Modern masters, while now also handling important works by Post-War masters. Typical of this new focus was Hammer's recent exhibitions Renoir, Modern Masters: Paris and Beyond and On Paper: Works by Impressionist, Modern and Post-War Masters.
The gallery’s upcoming exhibition: Objects in Space: Calder, Léger & Miró (November 1, 2012 - January 28, 2013) will feature significant paintings and sculpture by Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger and Joan Miró.  A selection of which will be presented for our debut at Art Basel Miami Beach 2012.
Howard Shaw, who began his career at Hammer Galleries in 1981, is the current President and Director.
