About the Venue

For thirty years, Mary Boone Gallery – originally in SoHo and presently on Fifth Avenue and in Chelsea – has maintained a vital presence for contemporary art in New York. The Gallery was founded with a dedication to show the work of innovative contemporary artists. The Gallery mounted early exhibitions for many influential Artists of the 1980s, and continues to represent them on the primary and secondary market: Richard Artschwager, Jean Michel Basquiat, Ross Bleckner, Francesco Clemente, Eric Fischl, Peter Halley, Anselm Kiefer, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, David Salle, Julian Schnabel. Artists of an earlier generation, such as Barry Le Va and Keith Sonnier, whose work would prove to be influential to the art of the1980s and remains relevant to the art of today, are now also represented by the Gallery. In the late 1990s, the VIEW series of exhibitions was established, wherein an Artist or curator is given the liberty to create a group exhibition. This program has enabled the Gallery to showcase historical works alongside works by Artists who are receiving their first wide exposure. Among these Artists who have gone on to have solo exhibitions at the Gallery are Hilary Harkness, and Aleksandra Mir. In 2008, Mary Boone Gallery organized the first major New York exhibitions of contemporary Chinese artists Ai Weiwei and Liu Xiaodong. As with showing new German and European Artists in the 1980s, these exhibitions continue the Gallery’s commitment to the contemporary art of a globalized world.
