About the Venue

Sotheby's predecessor firm in New York opened its doors in 1883 "to exhibit and sell works of art and literature." Since then, countless treasures have been auctioned by Sotheby's New York, ranging from baseball cards to spaceships, Rembrandts to Picassos and Greek vases to Tiffany lamps. Some of the most spectacular sales took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including van Gogh's Irises for $53,900,000 in 1987 and Renoir's Moulin de la Galette for $78,100,000 in 1990. Multi-million-dollar works of art create as much excitement as celebrity sales which over the years have included the collections of Sanford White (1907), Helena Rubinstein (1966) Andy Warhol (1988), Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1996) and the DU.K.e and Duchess of Windsor (1998).
