About the Venue

"Sotheby's opened its first French office in Paris in 1967. Today, the Sotheby's Parisian team comprises more than 85 people, who work in close collaboration with the Monaco office, the Bordeaux, Lyon, Nantes, Marseille, Montpellier and Strasbourg representatives as well as other Sotheby's offices world wide. Since January 1998, Sotheby's French headquarters have been situated in the heart of the Faubourg Saint-Honore, opposite the Elysee palace, in the famous Galerie Charpentier. This magnificent building, constructed during the Second Empire and remodelled during the 1930s, was at the centre of Parisian artistic life for more than forty years. The opening of the Sotheby's Paris saleroom was due to the tenacity of Laure de Beauvon Craon, who was named for the chairmanship of Sotheby's France in 1991. She set herself the mission of internationalizing the french auction market and tackling the-four-hundred-years-old monopoly of the french auctioneers. A law which is called Sotheby's law, was passed on july 2000: it brought an end to this monopoly. The famous Galerie Charpentier became an high place of the auctions where great collections were broken up: Leroy (2002), Jammes (2002), Berès (2002 et 2003), Karl Lagerfeld (2003), Johnson (2003), Lescure (2004), Nahon (2004), Castaing (2004), Portago, Vanthournout et Zake (2006), Feinsiber (2006), Leroy (2007). In 2005, Sotheby's France celebrated its 30 years of auctions in Monaco and Paris, and organised on march the auction of the Baron de Redé collection. Today, the Sotheby's Paris international saleroom is organising 30 sales per year, focusing on major art fields like Impressionist and Modern Art, Contemporary Art, African and Oceanic Art, Asian Art, 20th Century Decorative Arts; and french classical art departments as fine European Furniture and Works of Art, European Silver, Books and Manuscripts, Old Master and 19th Century Paintings and Drawings, and many single owner sales. In addition to its renowned auctions, Sotheby's Paris organizes each year festive and cultural events in its luminous rooms: cocktails, diners but also exhibitions and lectures."
