Kettle’s Yard starts the year with the first of a new series of exhibitions exploring Modern Times. Film-maker and painter Lutz Becker traces a journey through the 20th and 21st centuries through drawings and films. From Russian Constructivism and Italian Futurism to American Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, the exhibition features drawings by Malevich, Boccioni, Grosz, Pollock, Serra and a cavalcade of other artists - plus films by Viking Eggeling, Hans Richter and Fernand Léger. Against a backdrop of World Wars, urban living, scientific advance and threatened extinction, the exhibition draws out the contradictory arguments of Modernism, ‘the one art’, as Malcolm Bradbury concluded, ‘that responds to the scenario of our chaos.’
