Camille Henrot investigates myth and memory, knowledge and fiction, in a diverse body of work that includes films, drawings, installations, and sculptures. Her inspirations range from literary sources and film history to anthropology and religion. October 2015 Horoscope is part of an ongoing series of kinetic sculptures that look at the tendency of humans to become dependent; the complete “year” will debut as part of her solo exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris this fall. October 2015 Horoscope is principally a carnival of vice—it invokes our reliance on drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol—but it also suggests how apparent virtues like bodybuilding and exercise can become addictions (other works in the series consider our obsessions with love, pets, and technology). read more...

Bjarne Melgaard: The Casual Pleasure of Disappointment

Red Bull Arts New York is pleased to announce that its inaugural exhibition, under its new moniker, will be the first large-scale presentation of Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard’s ongoing project, The Casual Pleasure of Disappointment. Produced in collaboration with creative director Babak Radboy, the exhibition will feature a presentation of the eponymous menswear/unisex clothing line, The Casual Pleasure of Disappointment, which violently embraces the obsessive and self-destructive aspects of fashion and consumerism. For Melgaard, fashion is a vague nothing at the intersection of a subject and an object — between inadequacy, self-deceit, victimization, ethical compromise, intellectual humiliation, financial/romantic entanglements and corporeal decay — driven by an infinite cycle of disappointment and desire. read more...

As part of a circle of painters known as Abstract Expressionists, they helped forge the first fully American modern art movement. Lumia: Thomas Wilfred and the Art of Light

Lumia: Thomas Wilfred and the Art of Light is the first exhibition on this groundbreaking artist and his spellbinding light compositions in more than forty years. As early as 1919, well before the advent of consumer television and video technology, Wilfred began experimenting with light as his primary artistic medium, developing the means to control and project colorful, luminous forms that have been compared to the aurora borealis—and which he referred to collectively as lumia. The exhibition features nearly half of the extant light works by Wilfred representing each phase of his career, from early at-home instruments made for individual viewers to his most ambitious public installation, Lumia Suite, Opus 158, commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1963 and recently restored in a joint conservation project by the Gallery and MoMA. read more...
