Bearden/Picasso: Rhythms and Reverberations
The Mississippi Museum of Art welcomes you to view Bearden/Picasso: Rhythms and Reverberations from November 11, 2023, to March 3, 2024. The exhibition sheds light on the connections between Romare Bearden and Pablo Picasso.
From abstract oils to collage experiments, the exhibition is divided into four themes: Bulls & Bullfights, Music & Rhythm, Doors & Windows, and Line & Color, and balances Romare Bearden’s later collages and prints with rarely seen 1940s paintings that reflect Picasso’s influence, from spatial construction to including African designs. While Picasso deeply inspired Bearden, Bearden himself has become a legendary influence on 20th-century music, art, and social and political movements.
Bearden’s artistic journey displayed his Southern roots and Northern upbringing, reflecting the visual, auditory, and emotional memories from his childhood. Throughout his life, Bearden advocated for African-American artists and social justice through academic articles and the organization of group exhibitions for emerging artists. Cofounding the Cinque Gallery, an art space dedicated to young minority artists in need of space to showcase their work, Bearden continues to inspire generations of American artists who seek to incorporate social justice into the arts.
