Chasing Rembrandt: The Wadsworth’s quest for Rembrandt van Rijn

Apr 20, 2023 - Jul 23, 2023

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) is a towering figure in the history of art. His paintings have captured the imagination for centuries and established the artist’s reputation as one of the greatest in the Western tradition. The Wadsworth’s collection is, sadly, missing a painting by this Dutch master, despite many efforts to secure one. This exhibition looks back at our institution’s bold quest to obtain a Rembrandt by showcasing three rarely seen paintings, all of which were thought to be Rembrandts when they entered the collection. Now they are believed to be the work of pupils or imitators. Chasing Rembrandt explores these works of art, their changing history of attribution, and Rembrandt as a modern media phenomenon.
