Elementary Particles. Basic Components of the Sprengel Museum Hannover and its Art

Apr 13, 2019 - Feb 25, 2024

To mark its 40th anniversary, the Sprengel Museum Hannover is presenting the exhibition Elementary Particles in its extension. What are the institution’s core elements? What is art and what does art consist of, what does it refer to and what is it about? In ten themed rooms, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, as an institution, and its collection will be raising such fundamental questions.

What role does colour play as one of the basic components of art, what materials do artists use and what principles of form and design do they apply? What realities do works of conceptual art, abstraction and figuration address? What subjects figure most, what stories are told, and how is history reflected in art? Elementary Particles is bringing together more than 150 works from the 20th century and contemporary art and showing an impressively broad spectrum of forms of expression in painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography and film by artists such as Max Beckmann, Louise Bourgeois, Grethe Jürgens, Niki de Saint Phalle, Pablo Picasso and Gerhard Richter.
