Henri Matisse: Prints & Drawings
Henri Matisse was one of the most important pioneers of Classic Modernism and a leading proponent of Fauvism. Even the artists of abstract Expressionism in the USA based themselves on him. All his life, he was preoccupied with drawing; it enabled him to try out new ideas and compositions and was the most direct means of expression. He said: "A colourist makes his presence known even in a single charcoal drawing."
