IN TUNE WITH THE THEME

Jun 09, 2016 - Oct 08, 2016

IN TUNE WITH THE THEME presents around 60 editions made for Parkett, that play on the theme for Manifesta 11, which is on view in Zurich this summer: “What People Do for Money.” At the same time, the exhibition is an homage to the artist Christian Jankowski, chief curator of this year’s Manifesta, and the provocative, anarchistic joy with which his work disrupts established perceptions. For his 2008 collaboration with Parkett, Jankowski contributed a series of unique photographs that depict him reading Parkett in different places across the globe. IN TUNE WITH THE THEME includes a group of thirty works from this project, exhibited together for the first time.

On view are works by Kai Althoff, El Anatsui, Yto Barrada, Maurizio Cattelan, John Currin, Urs Fischer, Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Liu Xiaodong, Helen Marten, Cady Noland, Pamela Rosenkranz, Beat Streuli, Oscar Tuazon, Yang Fudong, and others, selected from Parkett’s three decade long history and in tune with the theme of this year’s Manifesta. Visitors will discover numerous motifs and images related to the topics of work and making money: David Hammons’s "Money Tree" refers to the dream of a basketball career; Rachel Harrison’s exuberant over-painted portrait of Prince pays tribute to the late musician’s electric talent; Mai-Thu Perret’s sculpture depicts a dancer with a red-lighted neon ring; John Waters re-creates the tragic end of a Hollywood star; Louise Bourgeois‘s hand-stitched "Reparations" relates to unpaid household work; and Cyprien Gaillard documents the fundraising for a church organ. All 15 designs of Franz West’s money pouch will be exhibited made from African textiles.

On display are early works by Francis Alÿs, Thomas Hirschhorn, Mariko Mori, Richard Prince, and Andy Warhol, as well as recent editions by Andrea Büttner, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Camille Henrot, and Hito Steyerl. Exhibited for the very first time are new works by Ed Atkins, Theaster Gates, Lee Kit, and Mika Rottenberg, created for the upcoming summer issue, Parkett 98.
