Ileana Sonnabend: An Italian Portrait is a tribute to the Romanian-born gallerist who died in 2007 and was among the most formidable dealers of her time. With 59 paintings, sculptures, and photographs by 46 artists, selected from her personal collection, the show includes works by Italian and international artists addressing their views of Italy. Together they illustrate the central position of the nation in Sonnabend’s career, affection, and aesthetic. Among the artists represented are Bernd and Hilla Becher, Lucio Fontana, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Cy Twombly as well as Arte Povera artists Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, and Gilberto Zorio.
