Impressive Stones

Oct 14, 2011 - Jan 16, 2012
In the late 1700s Alois Senefelder from Germany invented a new kind of chemical printing method that soon began to be used across Europe. The method was named lithography. Although it was not originally intended for printmaking, lithography quickly became an important tool used by many prominent artists thanks to its convenience and versatility. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Marc Chagall, Edvard Munch and Pablo Picasso are among those who adopted the technique.

The exhibition Impressive Stones presents the use of lithography in printmaking and posters. This is the first showing of, for example, French propaganda posters from the First World War that entered Ateneum's collections almost a hundred years ago.

The exhibition is connected with the Pro Litografia association's exhibition Drawn in Stone , which presents contemporary Finnish lithographers and their art at the Hanasaari Cultural Centre.
