17 Oct, 2024 - 16 Nov, 2024

Vicolo Milano celebrates 10 years of activity with the exhibition “JAM” by Jonathan Calugi.

The Milanese branch of Vicolo is celebrating an important milestone: ten years of activity in the heart of Milan. On the occasion of this significant anniversary, the gallery is pleased to announce the inauguration of the exhibition “Jam” by Jonathan Calugi, renowned Tuscan artist and illustrator of international fame. The inaugural event will be held on Thursday 17 October at 6:00 pm at the gallery in via Maroncelli 2, Milan. Jonathan Calugi, at his first collaboration with Vicolo, boasts a career full of collaborations with some of the most important international brands, including Nike, De'Longhi, Apple, Sony, Google, Facebook and Logitech and prestigious newspapers such as the New York Times. Calugi is already known in Milan for his mural interventions in emblematic places such as Scalo Farini for Trenitalia and the Mercato Centrale in Milan. The artist stands out for his ability to move between different directions, exploring both the world of illustration and a more pictorial approach on paper and canvas. His works are characterized by sinuous black lines that intertwine to create fluid images in white space, often enriched by colored geometric shapes. Among his most famous series, “Woman” and “Jazz”, there are respectively abstract female figures dancing on evocative backgrounds and visual representations of musical notes and rhythms. Jonathan Calugi’s exhibition represents an unmissable opportunity to immerse yourself in his creative universe and celebrate a decade of culture and art at Vicolo. The gallery, a historic presence in the Genoese art scene since 1967, was founded by Alf Gaudenzi, a futurist artist from Liguria, and his wife Piera. In 2014, Vicolo opened its Milan location, continuing the same original vision: to flank the contemporary art gallery with an art store with limited editions and multiples created by the artists who collaborate with the gallery. Jonathan Calugi’s bond with art was born from a spontaneous passion, fueled by family influences, in particular by his grandfather, who made carnival floats in New Orleans. This experience has allowed Calugi to perceive art as an accessible and achievable experience. Despite a different educational path, the artist has enriched his cultural background independently, experimenting and researching the artistic language most suited to his sensitivity. Inspired by the Graphic Design of the 60s, Calugi reduces the complex to its most essential form, favoring the scribble and linear drawing. It is precisely the line that constantly recurs in his works, becoming the distinctive feature of his work. Among his most recent collaborations, there is the contribution to the regeneration of the former Farini railway yard in Milan, where he reinterpreted the facade, demonstrating how his art can act as a connection tool, capable of stimulating different interpretations depending on the observer. In 2010,Calugi was selected by Print Magazine as one of the 20 New Visual Artists Under 30 and by the Art Director Club of New York as one of the 50 Young Guns Under 30 in the world.
