New Acquisition: Tenderlymilitant.exe by Anna Zoe Hamm
The Van Abbemuseum has acquired a remarkable new work: Tenderlymilitant.exe by Anna Zoe Hamm, a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven. The piece consists of five specially designed brooms that serve as a powerful symbol of resistance.
Hamm draws inspiration from plants and protest. In her work, she places the broom within a historical context of resistance against the oppression of women. Here, the broom does not represent cleaning, but strength and activism. Just as plants defend themselves with subtle force, Hamm explores how social forms of resistance can emerge. In an online catalogue, she translates plant functions into strategies for social defiance – a kind of guide for applying these ideas.
In an earlier performance, Hamm demonstrated how brooms can ‘fight’. She incorporates movements from aikido, computer games and the plant world, based on her research.
This acquisition was made on the recommendation of Lidewij Edelkoort. The Van Abbemuseum holds her former collection, and each year she is invited to propose one new work to keep the collection alive.
