In celebration of the centennial of the birth of Adolph “Bucks” Weil, Jr. on February 8, 1915 the MMFA is pleased to place on view a group of Old Master prints drawn from the 397 impressions in Mr. Weil’s personal collection that he and his wife donated to the Museum.
Works by Dürer,
Mantegna, the German Little Masters, de Bruyn, Callot,
Piranesi,
Goya, and Mr. Weil’s favorite—
Rembrandt—will be included, as well as etchings by Whistler. The Whistlers are later than 1830, the terminal date traditionally associated with Old Master prints, but Whistler, an expatriate American who worked in Europe, links the museum’s Old Master prints with its American collection as Mr. Weil intended when he espoused his vision for a MMFA print collection characterized by quality, variety, and lasting educational value.
