On the Turn: Selections From the Collection of Emily Fisher Landau

Oct 10, 2019 - Feb 21, 2020

LX is pleased and honored to present On the Turn: Selections from the Collection of Emily Fisher Landau. Since the early 1960s Landau has approached the act of collecting as a sincere and personal extension of herself. While amassing one of the most significant private collections in the United States, Landau also committed herself to sharing her art with the public. In 1991, Landau opened the Fisher Landau Center for Art where she presented thoughtfully curated exhibitions of her collection until its close in 2017. In 2010, Landau made a historic pledge of over 400 artworks by nearly 100 artists to the Whitney Museum of American Art, an exemplification of her dedicated and consistent patronage of the arts.

On the Turn is comprised of works that are representative of the larger collection's holding of the most important artistic sensibilities of the postwar era. Landau, never one to follow conventional taste or shy away from difficult conversations, once said of the artists in her collection that "...(they) portray the world we are living in now...whether you like it or not is beside the point." On the Turn speaks to Landau's passion for collecting artists who were or are truly revolutionary in their practices.

Throughout the exhibition there is an emphasis on the various elements of the human condition. These artists present our world as it is in our civilization or in more untouched settings, they capture the human body in exact or abstracted ways and navigate our relationships to others, ourselves and our surroundings.
