Rembrandt: Guest at the Museum

Mar 17, 2011 - Jun 26, 2011
From 17 March through 26 June 2011 an undisputed painting of Rembrandt van Rijn will be on exhibition, which is for the first time in the history of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe. For the occasion the Gobelin room will be transformed into a portrait gallery where Rembrandt’s young man will be in good company.

The portrait of an unknown young man comes from the collection of the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aix La Chapelle (Germany) and will be four months on loan to the museum. The finest portraits from the museum collection will be exhibited alongside the Rembrandt portrait in the Gobelin room.

Young talent

Rembrandt (c. 1607 – 1669) painted this oval portrait of a young man in 1632. He was about 25 and was just beginning his career. Around 1631 Rembrandt took up residence in Amsterdam as an independent artist. He was already an accomplished painter when he made this work, which was commissioned by a wealthy client. The young man must have had about the same age as Rembrandt. We can see that from his youthful features, hairstyle and dress. The portrait (64 x 47 cm) has retained its original oval form and is signed on the middle right RHL van Ryn and the year 1632.

Portrait gallery

The museum will be showing an exceptional selection of the finest portraits from the museum collection together with the portrait by Rembrandt. Specially for this occasion the Gobelin room will be transformed into a portrait gallery. In the room whose walls are normally covered by the gobelins, visitors will be invited to view and compare portraits from different centuries. Portraits which will be exhibited in the portrait gallery include two portraits by Friedrich Tischbein (1750-1812) and a portrait from the studio of Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497-1540).
