Rembrandt

Jan 12, 2022 - Feb 06, 2022

We are delighted to be exhibiting etchings by Rembrandt for our first show of 2022.

The technical mastery and inventiveness with which Rembrandt made his 300 or so etchings was already recognised in his lifetime and his prints were widely sought after. The very fact that his graphic work could be reproduced meant that it was his etchings, rather than his drawings or paintings, which led to his international reputation at the time.

The vast majority of Rembrandt etchings sold worldwide are posthumous impressions created at least a century after his death. A collection of 83 of his copper plates were acquired by the French dealer Pierre Francoise Basan, who in 1786, published the first ‘recueil’ (collection) of Rembrandt prints in Paris. In 1797, the plates passed to Basan’s son Henri Louise Basan who continued to publish further ‘recueils’ until approximately 1805. Today, Basan recueils are highly sought after and command high prices on the rare occasions they come to the market.
