Robert Indiana: The Mother Of Us All

This exhibition includes both a selection of Robert Indiana’s cut-paper scene and scene designs and six felt costumes for The Mother of Us All , Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson’s pioneering American opera inspired by the life of Susan B. Anthony. Exaggerating the silhouettes of period dress and the symbols of political spectacle, Indiana re-envisioned Stein and Thomson’s music drama of women’s suffrage battles for the Pop Art era. Still timely today, Indiana’s scene and costume designs will introduce Stein and Thomson’s The Mother of Us All to a new generation. Bringing together art, literature, music, history, and politics, the exhibition invites innovative programming and community partnerships.
