Spotlight: Lichtenstein and Monet
Roy Lichtenstein’s reflective work offers a new perspective on a long-revered subject: Monet’s renowned garden and lily ponds at Giverny, France. Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies with Clouds, 1992, is a large-scale print on stainless steel. It represents the Norton’s most significant work by the noted Pop artist and is the generous gift of the Thaler/Howell Foundation, Inc. Water Lilies with Clouds is part of a series of six screen-prints on stainless steel in which Lichtenstein reimagines Claude Monet’s Impressionist water lily paintings in his distinct and now iconic style. The lasting influence of Monet and his famous garden on subsequent artists is demonstrated in this Lichtenstein work which complements Mark Fox’s video, Giverny: Journal of an Unseen Garden, also a recent gift to the Norton.
