Van Gogh Inspires: Matisse, Kirchner, Kandinsky

Aug 24, 2016 - Nov 27, 2016

What did Van Gogh mean to the generation of artists after him? This small exhibition of fourteen highlights from the Merzbacher Collection illustrates how he influenced Fauvists and Expressionists.

Vincent van Gogh wrote, in a letter to his brother Theo, ‘Painters, being dead and buried, speak to several following generations through their works.’ And in fact, Van Gogh did become a shining example for many artists after him.

Inspiration

In 1905, the Fauvists in France and the German Expressionists of Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter began searching for ways to make their art more powerful and evocative. They were inspired by Van Gogh's colourful, dynamic and emotionally charged paintings. The personal quality of his work strengthened their desire to express their deepest feelings. These pioneering artists were looking for freedom in form and colour. In their search, they went a step beyond Van Gogh.

Generous loan

Thanks to the generous loan of fourteen of the finest works in the Merzbacher Collection, we can now show what Van Gogh meant to artists such as Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky.
