Art Dealing Guy
ONLINE: Jill Cunniff: Visual Songwriting
Art Dealing Guy is proud to announce Visual Songwriting, a solo exhibition by celebrated multidisciplinary artist Jill Cunniff. Featured in a curated Artsy viewing room, the show debuts ten original works that bridge the gap between contemporary abstraction and indie-rock history.
Best known as the founding member and principal songwriter of the iconic alt-pop band Luscious Jackson, Cunniff has spent her career navigating the intersection of sound and sight. While her musical legacy is etched into the DNA of New York’s 90s underground scene, her visual practice has emerged as a powerful "architectural mantra" for the modern age.
In Visual Songwriting, Cunniff utilizes a visceral, rhythmic process to build "The Architecture of Optimism." Each work is a layered history of hand-painted text, heavy-body acrylics, and oil pastels. Drawing direct inspiration from her own lyrics and the raw, wheat-pasted energy of lower Manhattan, Cunniff treats the canvas like a musical composition. Text emerges and recedes behind vibrant washes of neon pinks, deep indigos, and electric yellows, mirroring the way a melody floats over a bassline.
“I’ve always painted and written songs as a hand-off—switching between the two to find the same emotional resonance,” says Cunniff. “These works are intended to capture that specific rush of a favorite chorus, transforming a sonic moment into a permanent, visual sanctuary.”
Highlights of the exhibition include "ALRIGHT," a bold study in resilience, and "TRUE HEARTS," a work that serves as a visual counterpart to the gritty urban eulogies of her solo discography. The show also features exclusive studio photography, offering collectors a rare look at Cunniff’s physical "hand-lettering" technique and her vibrant Brooklyn workspace.
Visual Songwriting is more than an art exhibition; it is an analog reflection in a digital frenzy, inviting collectors to experience the "warm sound" of Cunniff’s visual philosophy.
