Avner Ben Gal: I Saw your Mother Standing at the Traffic Light

Avner Ben Gal: I Saw your Mother Standing at the Traffic Light at Gallery Har-El, Printers & Publishers

The exhibition’s title implies a double meaning: on the one hand it is a casual report of a wandering gaze while standing or passing at the traffic light, and on the other hand it is a statement which demarcates the "mother" from her role and marks her as a Commodity, a ready-made in the public domain

In his new exhibition at the Harel Gallery, Ben Gal presents a new series of paintings in which he focuses on the relationship between the individual and the universal, between the act of painting and its place in the world.

In the same way the paintings depict in tactile and mechanical gestures and blow-up (Screen print), descriptions of allegorical scenes depicting the folklore of different peoples, animals and organisms: Coptic monks playing with a spider; a mouse enjoying the rabbit’s fleece, fish watching a wolf and a goose; an archaic (Assyrian?) character peering into a home environment.

The group of 8 paintings “Two Brothers and Concern for the Future of the Children of the World” depicts a homely cinematic environment of card games, a landline telephone, a father figure and two children in a world in accelerated entropy.
