In the visual arts, writing has long since become an equal component alongside visual elements. Such developments have taken place internationally and can be observed in both German and Polish contemporary art. The group exhibition presents works from the collections of the BLMK and the Muzeum Sztuki Lodz in a comparative context, highlighting aesthetic parallels between the two neighboring countries.

The theme of writing in images plays an important role in contemporary visual art. Artists write pictures or paint writing. In text-based art, linguistic and visual forms of expression merge into an expanded visual language. The forms of calligraphic art are extremely diverse. Writing can appear in clearly recognizable letters, with legible words, or it can question the informational value of language through enigmatic symbols, illegible scribbles, and fragmented inscriptions.

Even in contemporary poster art, the purely text-based poster has become an undeniably dominant trend: Eliminated from the image, typography not only takes over the task of conveying factual information, but also brings pictorial qualities to the poster through experimental rhythmization or obscuring of the letters.
