Alec Soth: the Space Between Us

Alec Soth's photographs are rooted in the tradition of Walker Evans, Robert Frank, and Stephen Shore. His representation of everyday life conveys the American ideals of independence, freedom, spirituality and individualism. This exhibition features a selection from two of his best-known series: The first, Sleeping by the Mississippi, is the fruit of several journeys along the banks of this river that Soth calls “the third coast of the United States.” These large-format colour photographs — landscapes, interiors, portraits, objects and personal souvenirs — present eclectic images of an initiatory journey. They exude a sensation of solitude, expectation and dream. The second series, Niagara, is a complex ensemble juxtaposing images of the famous falls with those of lovers, love letters and even rubbish.This selection will be completed by a series of photographs that Soth took in Bogota when he went there with his wife to adopt a little girl. Dog Days, Bogota (2007) shows us a world of crumbling buildings, animals and humanity.
