Our City, Our Collection: Building the Museum's Lasting Legacy

Mar 12, 2016 - Aug 28, 2016

In celebration of the many extraordinary gifts that have made the Oklahoma City Museum of Art one of the premiere collecting institutions in central Oklahoma, Our City, Our Collection: Building the Museum’s Lasting Legacy tells the story of the Museum’s history as a series a major gifts and bequests, from a succession of visionary and philanthropic art patrons. Beginning with the Works Projects Administration’s donation of twenty-eight pictures to the city of Oklahoma City in 1942, a full three years before the creation of the Museum’s predecessor, the Oklahoma Art Center, Our City, Our Collection moves forward through the organization’s history, exploring a rich and dynamic permanent collection that remains one of our rapidly growing community’s most important cultural assets. Included in the exhibition are some of the most familiar names in the art world: Georgia O’Keeffe, Gustave Courbet, Marcel Duchamp, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alexander Calder, John Singleton Copley, Andrew Wyeth, Roy Lichtenstein, Dale Chihuly, and many, many more. It is their work that is the Museum’s lasting legacy to the city, our city.
