Tyler Museum of Art

Tyler | Texas | USA

The Tyler Museum of Art's growing permanent collection features more than 800 works including paintings, prints, photographs, and sculpture. With the fulfillment of the promised gift of the Laura & Dan Boeckman Collection of Mexican & Latin American Folk Art, one of the premier collections of its type in the U.S., the permanent collection will include close to 1,500 pieces.

Since opening in 1971, the Museum has concentrated on exhibitions of 19th and 20th century art and gained recognition for its particular emphasis on the work of emerging contemporary artists from Texas and surrounding states. For the past few years, exhibitions have included a greater variety of styles as the Museum has endeavored to more fully represent the diversity and interests of the community. Recent exhibitions have ranged from 18th and 19th century British teapots from the Norwich Castle Museum in England, to 16th and 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings. In 2005, the TMA was the only Texas venue, and the final museum in the United States, to exhibit the treasures of the dukes and duchesses of Britain's Devonshire family in the traveling show ""The Devonshire Inheritance: Five Centuries of Collecting at Chatsworth""; in 2006, the TMA was honored as the only Texas museum to exhibit the ""Saint John's Bible"" project, showcasing the first fully hand-crafted and hand-illuminated Bible since the invention of the printing press. Other exhibitions have featured Edward Hopper, Jun Kaneko, Norman Rockwell and James McNeill Whistler, as well as a comprehensive retrospective of the work of the late Louisiana artist Clyde Connell. With the new 2008 show ""Graham Williford's America,"" the TMA has organized one of the earliest major exhibitions spotlighting the vast collection of Graham Devoe Williford, whose focus on the collecting, study and preservation of 19th-century American artists helped bring their works back into the cultural forefront in the late 1950s.
