About the Artwork
Executed in 2012, Mark Swanson’s Untitled (Crystal Antler Trio) consists of a set of three crystal encrusted deer antlers interlocked with one another in which each antler hangs from a delicate metal chain coiled around the base of the antler. The juxtaposition of the naturally-shed antlers with crystals and silver chains in this piece is characteristic of Swanson’s ouevre. This stylish juxtaposition of crystals and stag heads stems largely from the artist’s personal history as a means of exploring the duality of identities he experienced in his childhood in a small New England town as the son of an ex-marine and devoted hunter and during his experience as a member of San Francisco’s gay community.
