About the Artwork
A hybrid relief that combines pictorial and sculptural elements, such as the added hand clasping a candles, I Progressive explores the concept of identity in modern society. Forms and texts are used here as a means of critically reflect upon the notion of the self and, in particular, the contemporary creation of a liquid subject situated between the “I” and the “we”. As the artist explains: “My work is really about how we receive ideas about ourselves from outside of our lived experience, that leads to all kind of expectations about how or what our lives should be”.
Using a wide range of media that includes sculpture, drawing, text and video, Titchner’s practice often combines found text from a variety of sources, such as song lyrics, philosophical treatises and political manifestos to create powerful images and ideas that can shift public notions of what is possible in our world today.
