The Currents of Italian New Tendencies | 60’s
The exhibition NEW TENDENCIES ’60 offers a multifaceted insight into the Italian art scene of the 1960s. It focuses on three pivotal exhibitions: „GENCAY, BRTKA, FRANCHINI“ (Rome, 1964), „FORME PRESENTI“ (Rome, 1965) and „ILLUMINATION“ (Trento, 1967), where the artist group of the same name made its debut. These exhibitions reflect a time of artistic awakening, marked by the search for new visual languages and a conscious departure from traditional concepts of art.
The international movement known as New Tendencies, launched in Zagreb in 1961, reflected a shared intellectual framework centered on systemic experimentation in visual art. Artists from across the globe engaged in exploration of light, movement, geometric structures, and perceptual effects. Similar approaches were simultaneously developed in Italy, especially through collectives like Gruppo N and Gruppo T, contributing to the broader discourse on programmed and optical art.
The exhibition brings together artists from different countries and contexts – NOBUYA ABE (Japan), ALDO SCHMID (Italy), BRUNO CONTE (Italy), MARCIA HAFIF (USA), PAOLO PATELLI (Italy), SHU TAKAHASHI (Japan), GENCAY KASAPÇI (Turkey), ANTONIO FRANCHINI (Italy), MILENA ČUBRAKOVIĆ and MIRA BRTKA (Yugoslavia) – all of whom were part of this vibrant international network.
