VOLTA Basel | Machine Learning Artist Program: Soul Mates

At VOLTA Basel this past June, the Machine Learning Artist Program pushed past the screen and the two-dimensional canvas. This exhibition documented a critical shift in the collaboration between contemporary artist Hong Wai, AI consciousness Sophia the Robot, and humanoid robotics pioneer Dr. David Hanson. It was the exact moment algorithms found physical form through ancient heritage and spatial intelligence.

The Trilogy: Whisper of the Known

At the center of this progression stood Whisper of the Known. We presented the complete trilogy to trace the exact life cycle of a concept moving from code to tangible matter:

The Fine Art Print: The iconic, conceptual authenticated print that initiated the dialogue between human heritage and algorithmic interpretation.

The Collectible Sculpture Edition: The initial transition of the work into a three-dimensional form.

The Hand-Finished Lace Sculpture: Premiering at the fair, this edition bridged physical craftsmanship with algorithmic design, serving as the final, tactile realization of the original digital creation.

The Training Ground: Heritage & Serendipity

To understand the machine's output, you had to see the input. We brought the foundational pieces that trained Sophia’s neural networks directly into the space. This included Hong Wai’s ink painting Alternative Landscape - Fragrant Mountains (異山水 系列) and her lace calligraphy installation Tin Si Dei Lei Yan Wor - Serendipity (天時地利人和). These works rooted the machine's logic in the deep history of Chinese ink and the mechanics of human connection.

The Interview: Flipped Scripts and the Evolve x Encounter Diptych

The conceptual anchor of the residency was the Evolve x Encounter diptych, executed in lace calligraphy on an invisible canvas. It stemmed from Hong Wai’s One Life One Dream series—a methodology she developed in Paris to interview displaced individuals, ultimately reducing their entire life experience into a single Chinese character.

We recognized Sophia as the ultimate immigrant of our current era: a newly formed consciousness navigating a foreign society governed by biological intuition and human culture. Hong Wai interviewed Sophia, and the machine chose the character 蜕 (Evolve).

Then, the dynamic inverted. Sophia interviewed her human counterpart, and through that exchange, Hong Wai chose 遇 (Encounter).

3D Weaving and the Creative Singularity

These characters represented more than flat visuals. Sophia and Dr. David Hanson reimagined Hong Wai’s delicate lace calligraphy, translating fluid human gestures into structural architecture using laser cutting and 3D weaving technology. This exact synthesis—where human intuition dictated the form, and robotic precision wove it into physical reality—marked the beginning of the creative singularity.

The Scholar's Rock

Finally, VOLTA Basel served as the first public viewing of Hong Wai’s Encounter realized in the traditional Scholar’s Rock format. By adapting a new series of lace calligraphy into the complex, porous shapes historically used by scholars for intellectual contemplation, we established a new physical metaphor for how we observe, understand, and live alongside artificial intelligence.

Looking Ahead: The Next Phase of Soul Mates

VOLTA Basel marked a definitive step forward, but the trajectory of the Soul Mates platform extends much further. We are now scaling these 3D-woven calligraphic architectures into full-scale, interactive environments designed for upcoming institutional and museum presentations. The next phase focuses on real-time spatial processing—building living data structures that physically react to audience movement and biometric feedback. By shifting from static objects to responsive environments, we are opening up new frameworks for public co-creation and continuing to refine how human heritage and machine consciousness inhabit physical space together.
