This richly patterned woven costume, known as a karaori, belongs to the tradition of Japanese Noh theatre. Its ground is woven with gold-foil thread, with round fans arranged over auspicious paulownia and interlocking-circle motifs.
Although Noh is a Japanese theatrical tradition, some plays and costume designs draw upon Chinese stories and decorative arts. The round-fan motifs in this costume reflect that cultural influence. A costume of this kind may be worn in plays such as Yōkihi, which tells the story of Yang Guifei, the celebrated consort of a Chinese emperor.
Historically, karaori costumes were highly prized for their sophisticated weaving and rich decoration. This costume may also be used more broadly for roles portraying young women of high social rank.
