Pale-Yellow Noh Theatre Costume with Phoenix and Floral Patterns

Decorative ArtRichly patterned woven costume + Stand (Optional)
170 x 160 см; (66.929 x 62.992 inches)
Edition
This richly patterned woven costume, known as a karaori, belongs to the tradition of Japanese Noh theatre. It features a classical floral-diamond pattern woven with gold-foil thread against a pale-yellow ground. Phoenixes appear among flowering branches of peony, chrysanthemum and cherry blossom. The phoenix motif reflects the influence of Chinese decorative traditions on Japanese costume design. Regarded in China since ancient times as one of the most auspicious birds, the phoenix symbolises exceptional good fortune, peace and prosperity. In Noh theatre, this elegant costume is suitable for a wide range of roles portraying refined young women of high social standing.
