This richly patterned woven costume, known as a karaori, belongs to the tradition of Noh—a classical form of Japanese theatre combining music, chanting, dance and highly stylised movement.
The fabric is woven in alternating bands of red, white and reddish black. The colour variations are created by dyeing separate sections of the warp threads before weaving. Cloud-shaped panels contain interlocking-circle motifs and stylised hemp-leaf geometric patterns, while bush clover, chrysanthemums and peonies decorate the background.
In Noh theatre, costumes containing red generally signify younger female characters, while costumes without red are associated with older women. This costume is typically used to portray a young woman of comparatively lower social rank.
